The process of estate administration varies depending on a number of factors, such as whether or not the deceased left a will, the size of the estate and the types of assets held. Where there are substantial assets it is usually necessary for the person administering the estate to obtain a grant of probate or, where there is no will, a grant of letters of administration. Small estates can sometimes be administered without a grant. The estate is administered by ensuring that all debts have been paid, and that the estate is distributed to the people entitled either under the will or on intestacy.
